Olomouc
Olomouc has always been one of the most important royal cities in the Czech lands. Thanks to its convenient location, ancient university, spiritual, cultural and craft traditions, it has been the natural center of Moravia for many centuries, attracting artists, scholars and merchants.
Olomouc Castle was built at the beginning of the 11th century, although the settlement of this area has a much longer history. It has been run as a royal city since 1253. Olomouc was the first capital of Moravia, but later lost this position to Brno. Partly also due to the destructive Swedish occupation in the years 1642–1650, on the contrary, thanks to the construction of the fortress, it withstood the Prussian siege of 1758.
Olomouc is a university town and the capital of Haná, which was promoted to archbishopric in 1777. Olomouc, as an important statutory city, has been one of the district cities of the Czech Republic since 1960, and at the beginning of the 21st century it became the center of the Olomouc Region.
